Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world to visit, but don’t let that fool you for a moment, it’s also a very exciting place, especially if you’re visiting Singapore for the first time. On the surface, Singapore just seems like a bright collection of high-rise apartments and corporate buildings, but once you get beyond that, you’ll understand that Singapore is truly exciting and why you should visit (or return) very soon. Take a look below at some of the things you need to know before you visit Singapore.
What to Know Before Travelling to Singapore
1. A Walkable City
You can’t say that often, but you can walk almost anywhere in Singapore. And yes, that means a whole country is walkable. This great news is not only in terms of daily strides, but also means you can enjoy my favorite travel activity: you can walk around and suppress the mood. Some of my favorite areas are within walking distance: Haji Lane, Little India, and Jalan Besar.

2. Climate is Humid
Everyone knows that Singapore is warm all year round. On the other hand, many visitors do not realize that it is not the tropical temperature but the high humidity that makes it so uncomfortable. To paraphrase what an Australian couple once told me, entering Lion City is similar to entering a sauna. An island-wide sauna is open 24 hours a day. For people visiting Singapore, this means more things. It will sweat, so you need to keep hydrating constantly. Also, bring a small towel or similar to clean every half hour. The extra clothes in the living room package are usually also a good idea.
3. Not a Cheap City
One thing you will notice when you visit Singapore is how much more expensive it is compared to other Asian areas. This city-state apparently has the most millionaires in the world, so that may not be much of a surprise, but Singapore is easily passing by famous expensive cities like London and New York in terms of prices.

4. City of Multicultural
One thing you notice when you visit Singapore is multiculturalism. The mix of former slaps and locals results in such a vibrant fusion of the different cultures, foods, and experiences experienced in the city.
5. You can travel on a budget
If you have a budget, don’t rule out Singapore – it’s definitely affordable. The food here is among the best in the world and can be earned for just $ 3-4. Mobile data is super cheap. Try shopping at the markets or some boutiques, local shops, not the huge, modern malls scattered around Singapore.

6. Chewing gum is illegal
In 1992, the Singapore government banned chewing gum. This ban meant heavy fines and possible imprisonment for importers and distributors. For travelers, this meant that it was best to avoid all rubber imports to Singapore. This concern has largely remained despite the fact that the ban was partially lifted in 2004 due to a fair trade agreement with the United States. It is not illegal to chew rubber in Singapore today. You can even buy gum from pharmacists, including sugar-free, nicotine, and therapeutic gum. I suggest you refrain from importing gum containing sugar or large amounts of other gum, but you won’t be arrested at the border because a package holds sugar-free gum in your hand luggage.

7. Avoid drugs in Singapore
It goes without saying that you should not try to smuggle or distribute drugs anywhere in the world. But many countries (including many that are currently in America) have legalized the use of certain recreational or medical drugs, including marijuana. Singapore is not one of these countries. Drug use, including marijuana, is an extremely serious crime here. Possession of drugs alone can result in up to 10 years in prison in Singapore. Possession of more than 500 grams of marijuana requires the death penalty.
8. Singapore has a great nightlife
The nightlife in Singapore is very fantastic! Clarke Quay is a great place to start the night (maybe even finish one), after which you can get a taxi and head to a whole host of fantastic clubs. In fact, this is one of the reasons why visiting Singapore is so much fun.
9. Easy and Convenient Public Transportation
When traveling to a new city, most of us are worried about transportation. But that should be the last thing that goes on in Singapore. The city-state has a good transport system, is well connected and can be easily reached by bus, train or taxi from one place to another. While the bus and subway are quite convenient, taxis are also popular modes of transport as they are quite economical. However, you may have to pay a surcharge during peak hours. In short, moving around the city is not a problem at all.
