Spain is soon going to make some train travel absolutely free for travelers. The Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez announced a new policy for travelers in which the cost of train travel will be zero. Yes, you heard it right, soon travelers can explore Spain via Renfe, and the public train network for $0.
In a statement, the Transport Minister of Spain said “This measure encourages to the maximum the use of this type of collective public transport to guarantee the needed daily commute with a safe, reliable, comfortable, economic and sustainable means of transportation, amid the extraordinary circumstances of the steady increase of energy and fuel prices.” according to CNN.
The free rail ride will be on various tickets (for those that inculcate at least 10 return trips) on rodalies (commuter routes in Catalonia), medium-distance routes (for those which cover a distance of about 186 miles or less than 300km), and cercanías (commuter services).
According to Guardian, the main aim of these free tickets is the citizens of Spain but tourists can take the advantage of this. Note that the free train tickets are not for long-distance train travel or single-journey tickets.
The free train ride is going to start from 1st September till 31st December 2022. The central Spanish government had previously offered discounts in addition to this new 100 percent reduction. According to Time Out, the government said earlier this month that it will provide 30 percent to 50 percent discounts on all forms of public transportation, including metros, buses, and trams.
This summer and fall, other countries outside Spain are also providing citizens and visitors with free or inexpensive rides.
