St. Simon the Fisherman is believed to have been born in the city of Gessarea and was a follower of Jesus Christ. He was also known as St. Simeon of Jerusalem. According to legend, it is said that Jesus called Simon to be a fisherman to illustrate the teachings of how to catch people by the word of God. He is venerated mostly in the Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, where his feast day is celebrated on the 28th of October.
