Notre Dame de Lourdes is a Roman Catholic Basilica located in Lourdes, France. The basilica stands atop the area where Our Lady of Lourdes appeared 18 times to the young peasant girl, Bernadette Soubirous. History:

A spring of water is said to have appeared at the site in 1858, and locals believed that the Virgin Mary had appeared to Bernadette Soubirous near the spring. The Bishop of Tarbes soon recognized the sanctity of the site and a grotto was built to commemorate the visions. During the 1860s and 1870s, several small chapels were built and the site became a major destination for Catholics from around the world. In 1871, a bishop declared that the location was indeed a site of pilgrimage and in 1876, a larger basilica was built.
