The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a monumental mosque in Cairo, Egypt, East of the Citadel. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan was built between 1356 and 1363 during the Bahri Mamluk period, commissioned by Sultan an-Nasir Hasan and is considered to be the best example of the Mamluk architectural style. It was built during a time of chaos and political changes within the Mamluk kingdom and serves as a reminder of Sultan an-Nasir's commitment to reforming the Mamluk kingdom. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is composed of a large courtyard, surrounded by four iwans and with a monumental entrance that has been beautifully decorated with various geometric patterns and calligraphy crafted from marble and stained glass. The huge mosque combines both the mosque and the madrasa, where madrasa students learned various Islamic studies and knowledge. Inside the mosque is the Salih al-Jemili Dome, which is considered to be the largest masonry dome ever built. Today, the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan still serves as an important place of worship in Cairo with around 400 worshippers during every prayer service. Aside from hosting religious services, the Mosque-Madrassa also functions as a cultural center, providing educational and social support services to visitors and visitors alike, as well as holding regular lectures, workshops, and exhibitions.
