The Brooklyn Bridge, which opened in 1883, is one of the oldest and most iconic suspension bridges in the world. Spanning the East River between the City of Brooklyn and the Island of Manhattan, it is one of the most recognizable symbols of New York City. It was the first bridge to connect these two boroughs of New York City, and it remains an important link in the city's infrastructure, carrying an estimated 140,000 vehicles and pedestrians on a daily basis. The dream of constructing a bridge connecting Manhattan and Brooklyn first surfaced around 1803, when the political and business leaders of the two boroughs sought such a bridge as a way of boosting their economies and boosting the morale of their people. It was not until 1867, however, that a plan was devised that was deemed feasible. Engineer and inventor John Augustus Roebling was chosen to oversee the project and on January 3, 1870, after 19 years of planning, the first stone was laid on the Brooklyn Bridge. The construction of the bridge was no easy task. Roebling died in 1869 from tetanus, after he had been seriously injured by a caisson while conducting a survey. His son, Washington Roebling, took over the engineering and construction duties. In 1875, the work was stalled after an accident in a caisson left Washington Roebling paralytic and nearly blind. His wife Emily Warren Roebling stepped in to oversee the project for the remainder of its construction. The bridge was opened to the public in May 1883 and celebrated with a great parade. The total cost of its construction ran to nearly $15 million, an enormous amount for the time, especially considering the financial woes of the country at the time. In 1903, the tramways crossing the bridge were electrified, and in 1909 the first motor traffic crossed the Brooklyn Bridge. During the 20th Century, the bridge was renovated several times, including the massive reconstruction project undertaken between 1991 and 2001.
