The church was founded by a group of international missionaries and Lutheran pastors in Yokohama, Japan and was originally a Congregationalist Church. The first services held were conducted in English and German. During the decades following its inception, the church experienced both growth and succession in its leadership and was eventually led by a pastor of the United Church of Christ in Japan. In 1958, the church was re-named Yokohama Christ Church (YCC) and was officially registered as a legal entity in Japan. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
