The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) was founded in 1959 with a mission to study, protect, and conserve tropical plants in Southwest China. It is also the main branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) located in Yunnan province. It is one of the most important botanical gardens in China and is the largest in Asia specialising in tropical plant research. It consists of an area of 1,559 hectares, including 736 hectares of forests and 40 hectares of a lake. It is well known for its rich biodiversity, with more than 5,000 plant species, including several hundred rare and endangered species. It is home to many iconic plant species, including the coffee tree (Coffea arabica), the Ganoderma lucidum mushroom, and tropical bamboo forests. The XTBG is an important centre for scientific research and public education. Its scientists are involved in research programs on a range of topics, including global climate change, plant molecular biology, ecology, evolution, and conservation. It also houses the National Centre for Tropical Medicine, which provides disease control and public health services related to tropical plants.
