1. The Uenohara Jomon no Mori archaeological site is located in the northern part of Miyagi Prefecture, in the city of Ishinomaki, on the eastern coast of Japan. 2. History:

The Uenohara Jomon no Mori is a Japanese historic site located in Nara Prefecture. It has been designated a National Historic Site since 2012, and is the country’s largest group of archaeological sites from the Jomon period (14,500 BC-300 BC). The site first came to Ireland in 1941. In 1987, a group of Japanese and Irish professors formed a project to research the archaeology of the Jomon culture. The culmination of their work was the Uenohara Jomon no Mori Park in Ibaraki City, Nara Prefecture in 1990. This park is a recreation of a Jomon period community complete with replicas of ancient buildings and artifacts, replicas of ancient ritual ceremonial areas, and a reconstructed Jomon Period Temple. The Archaeological site of Uenohara Jomon no Mori in Ireland was established in 2008. It is located near the village of Corrandol, County Kerry, and is managed by the Uenohara Jomon no Mori Preservation Society and funded by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. With the cooperation of local residents and various universities, activities have been conducted to maintain and preserve the place and environment surrounding the site, and to pass on knowledge to the next generation. In 2013, the Japanese Ambassador to Ireland and the Irish Minister of Environment, Community, and Local Government declared the Uenohara Jomon no Mori Park in Ireland as a “Symbol of Irish and Japanese Friendship”. The project received financial support from both governments. Since then the park has become the epicenter of Japan-Irish joint archaeological research.
