The Pinnacles are a collection of ancient limestone formations located in Nambung National Park in Western Australia. The pinnacles were formed approximately 25,000 to 30,000 years ago when seashells were deposited onto the sandy dunes of the Lunette area of the Park. These shells slowly built up over time and with the help of the wind and rain, the seashells became cemented together and eventually hardened into limestone. The Pinnacles are an important part of Aboriginal history, with the Nyoongar people of the area believing the unique formations were formed by eggs laid by the "Hannel", a magical Australian brush-turkey. The formations remain an important spiritual and cultural site for the Nyoongar people today. While the Pinnacles were renowned overseas long before they were even known of by the locals, the area was first recorded by the European settlers who arrived in the State in the 1870s. The formations were first mentioned in detail in a journal kept by early explorer and surveyor John Forrest in 1878. The Pinnacles were officially conserved and made a national park in the 1950s until it was later declared an Aboriginal reserve in 1954.
