History:
The city of Teotihuacán, located in the Central Valley of Mexico, is one of the most important and mysterious archaeological sites in the New World. Its ancient inhabitants built some of the largest structures ever created in the Americas, making it one of the largest cities of its time. Its original name remains unknown, as its founders were pre-Hispanic civilizations that left no written accounts of their history. The city of Teotihuacán was founded around 100 BCE and is believed to have reached its peak in between 150 and 450 CE. It was a major hub of Mesoamerican culture and trade. At its peak, it was occupied by as many as 200,000 people, and its vast marketplaces attracted visitors from all over Mesoamerica. Its ruler is thought to have belonged to the powerful Tlatoani dynasty. At the heart of Teotihuacán lies the immense Pyramid of the Sun, one of the largest structures of its kind in the world. The Pyramid has never been fully excavated, but its base is an impressive 250 feet wide, and experts estimate that it could have been nearly 230 feet tall. Around the pyramid are several other structures, including the Avenue of the Dead and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Together, these were believed to have been used for religious ceremonies and to mark astronomical events such as solstices and eclipses. The city began to decline in the 8th century, and by the 1200s, it was nearly abandoned. Its cause is a mystery, as no written records from that time have survived. In the 16th century, the Aztecs visited the ruins and gave them the name Teotihuacán, which means “the place where men become gods.” This is still the name by which the city is best known today.
