Worship Method:
, the Temple of Osiris at Abydos is an ancient religious complex situated on the East Bank of the Nile. The main structure of the temple was built during the Middle Kingdom era but there are signs of older structures in the temple’s vicinity. In regard to worship at the temple, there were several ways in which the ancient Egyptians would pay reverence to the god of the underworld. One traditional method was called the ritual of the Mystic Columns. This ritual entailed encircling the temple with seven columns—four at the cardinal points of the cardinal directions and three additional ones placed among them—making grandiose offerings and prostrating oneself in front of each column. Another way the ancients would pay homage was in the practice of offering ritual cakes to the god. The cakes would be placed on small trays at the entrance of the temple in hopes they would satisfy Osiris and appease his hunger. The most important ritual conducted within the inner chamber of the temple was the offering of seven bowls of water to the god. This ritual symbolized the seven stages of Osiris’ descent into the underworld and his eventual resurrection. In addition to the water offering, sacrifices such as oxen and grain might have also been part of the proceedings. Finally, the religious ceremonies within the complex were often concluded with the recitation of the Pyramid Texts. These are ancient incantations which seek to evoke the deities of ancient Egypt and give power to the ritual. These are some of the methods of worship which would have been conducted at the Temple of Osiris at Abydos. This most visited temple in Egypt
