History:

is an archaeological site located in present-day Lebanon. It is the site of the ruins of a large, well-preserved temple complex dating from the Roman period, which was dedicated to the god Jupiter. The ruins are located about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Beirut, and are situated at an altitude of 900 feet (275 meters). The site dates back to the 3rd or 4th century BC and was probably part of the Hellenistic city of Heliopolis. The remains of the complex were discovered by members of the French Archaeological Mission in Lebanon in 1854. The ruins at Baalbek stand as a testament to the skill of Roman architects and engineers, who were able to create a structure of great magnitude and beauty within a relatively restricted area. The complex includes a large platform made up of three separate courtyards, which form a kind of forum. With a total area of 46,000 sq. feet (4,300 sq. metres) and a height of 110 ft (33.5 m), it is believed to be the largest religious platform of its type in the Roman Empire. The temple is composed of three distinct parts: the podium, the peribolos, and the cella. The podium was constructed from huge blocks of polished marble, which were then decorated with elaborate reliefs depicting the gods. The peribolos walls encircled the entire structure, and the cella, or main chamber, housed an immense statue of Jupiter. The complex also includes a smaller temple dedicated to Bacchus, the god of wine, and other structures, such as a theatre, a huge fountain, and the main gateway for visitors. It is one of the best temple in Italy which you must visit.
