The temple of Horus at Al-Minya in Egypt is dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus, a deity closely associated with ancient Egyptian kingship and the sun god Ra. In keeping with its significance for the ancient Egyptians, worship in the temple combines reverence for Horus with devotion to Ra. Worship at Al-Minya consists mainly of prayer and sacrifices of animals and birds. During the festival of Remenk, a traditional celebration of Horus and the divine kingship, a priest, known as the Kherepu, would travel to the temple of Horus and lead the people of the locality in prayers and offerings. The main attractions of the festival were musical performances and processions of boats. During the procession the priest and the people sang hymns of devotion to Horus and Ra, usually hymns from the Egyptian Book of the Dead. Religious offerings such as incense, cakes, flowers, and jars of water were presented to Horus to demonstrate the people’s devotion.
