It dates to the Twentieth dynasty of the New Kingdom period, though its present form was built during the Eighteenth dynasty. It was built to commemorate the restoration of the cult of Amun-Ra at Luxor, after the turmoil of the Amarna period and the abandonment of the former capital Akhet-Aten in favor of a return to traditional polytheism. The temple was constructed around 1400BC and was dedicated to the god Amun-Ra, the king of the gods. The south side of the temple was dedicated to the god Amun, and was the most sacred part of the temple. It contained the inner sanctuary, which was the most important area.
