History:

Tambopata National Reserve in Peru was created as the first protected area in Amazonian Peru in 1978, with the help of conservation organization Conservation International in Peru. In 1985, it was declared by the government of Peru as a National Wildlife Refuge (RNN). The reserve is situated in the Tambopata Province, Madre de Dios Department, located on the southeastern part of Peru. Tambopata National Reserve is part of the Manu Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The reserve encompasses approximately 1,881,986 acres. It is bordered by two other protected areas, Bahuaja Sonene National Park and Madidi National Park in Bolivia, which together form a conservation corridor of more than 12 million acres. The reserve provides habitat for jaguar, giant river otter, giant armadillo, capybara, and other species. The most common bird species include toucans, parrots, and macaws.
