Tambo Colorado is one of the most important archaeological sites in Peru. The site is located in the department of Ica and is situated between the ancient sites of Pachacamac and Paracas. The buildings of Tambo Colorado date from the years of 750-1532 A.D. and are some of the largest and most complex in the region. History:

Tambo Colorado is a pre-Inca archaeological site in the Huaral province of Peru. Dating to around 1000 BC, the site consists of a series of zigzag shaped adobe walls constructed in U shape around a central plaza or patio. Inside the U-shaped walls are several circular structures that were believed to be used as homes or for religious ceremonies. The site was first discovered in 1901 and immediately became important due to its position on a trade route between the coastal region and the Andes. It was thought that the site was once used as an administrative center or religious sanctuary by local cultures in this region. The site has been partially excavated and reveals some of the customs and beliefs of the people who lived here before the Inca. Many artifacts have been discovered at Tambo Colorado such as ceramic vessels, stone tools, and gold jewelry. Studies of the site indicate that it was used from around 100 BC until sometime in the 15th century. The name of the site is thought to have originally been derived from the Quechua term “tambor”, which means “stairway”. It is believed that this name was given to the site due to its stepped walls which extended up the sides of the mountain.
