The bells were gifted to Western Australia by James Battye, a historian and the first librarian of the Western Australian State Library, in celebration of the state’s centenary. After members of the public donated £2,600 for transport and installation, the Swan Bells arrived in Perth in 1986 and were installed in the Bell Tower at Barrack Square. At the time of their gift, the bells were the oldest set of chimes in the world – they are still in use, ringing out regularly, often several times a day. At the time, the bells were rung manually using heavy wooden mallets, before being automated in 1969. Each bell is tagged with its note and name, with the heaviest bells striking lower notes. The bells range from E flat, named 'General,' to B flat, named 'Maria.' The bells are rung on ceremonial occasions such as royal visits and special anniversaries, as well as at intervals throughout the day to mark the start of the hour.
