History:
The St. Petersburg Mosque is the largest mosque in Europe outside of Turkey, and it opened on June 25, 2013. Located in the student district of Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg, the mosque has a capacity of up to 5,000 worshipers. Prior to construction of the St. Petersburg Mosque, the Muslim community in St. Petersburg had no mosque of its own. Muslim worshipers, mostly from the countries of the former Soviet Union, had to go to small prayer rooms housed in apartments. Construction of the mosque was announced in 2003. Initial construction was met with stiff resistance from non-Muslim residents of Vasilyevsky Island who feared that an Islamic center was seen as a sign of rising Islamic fundamentalism. In 2007, a construction site for the mosque was officially approved near the Okhta River. Decisive action by the St. Petersburg administration led to the official start of construction in 2011. The construction of the mosque was completed in 2013 at the cost of $170 million, and the mosque was officially opened two years later. The St. Petersburg Mosque design features an Ottoman-style minaret surrounded by four domes symbolizing the four schools of Islamic law. The interior was designed to evoke the natural beauty of the Caucasus and Ural mountain ranges. The complex also includes a dental clinic, a religious school, a library, a small hotel and an historic park. Visit one of the famous monuments of Russia with your friends and family.
