It is renowned for its venerated relic, the Manoppello Image, which is also known as the Volto Santo or Holy Face. The image is kept in a glass case above the altar in the sanctuary's Church of the Holy Face, and is believed to be the same cloth piece as the Veil of Veronica, a relic associated with the Passion of Jesus Christ. According to tradition, the robe was given to St. Veronica on her pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and is the cloth on which the image of Jesus' face was printed from when he wiped his face with it on the road to Calvary. The image is said to have come to Manoppello in the 15th century, and has been revered by pilgrims and clergy ever since.
