Sacsayhuaman (also written as Saksaywaman) is an archaeological site located in the Northeastern part of Peru, near Cusco. According to Inca mythology, the site was the birthplace of Manco Cápac, the first Inca ruler, who was sent to Pachacamac by the creator god Viracocha to build a city. It is believed to be the first Inca building, and thus the birthplace of the Inca Empire. The site of Sacsayhuaman is composed of several giant stone walls, towers, courtyards, and plazas, making it one of the largest and most impressive ruins of the Incas. Its prominent location high above the city of Cusco force the population of the city to acknowledge the power of the Incas and their rulership over the city.
