Pyramid of Unas is an Egyptian pyramid located in the town of Saqqara and is the earliest known cut-stone pyramid structure in Egypt. It was built during the reign of the Fifth Dynasty Pharaoh Unas, circa 2375-2345 BCE. The pyramid is minor compared to the size of some of the later pyramids, but it is significant in that it gave us our initial understanding of the funerary practices of the Ancient Egyptians.

The Pyramid of Unas is believed to have been designed and constructed by the architect Imhotep, who was an engineer, architect, and astronomer in the court of Pharaoh Zoser who, a few centuries earlier, designed the world’s oldest-known step pyramid. Unas commissioned the pyramid’s construction to honor the death of his father, the Pharaoh Teti. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Egypt.
