Overview:

The Pyramid of Teti (also known as Teti's Pyramid), located at Saqqara in Egypt, is the oldest of the three major pyramids of the former capital of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, Memphis. Built during the Sixth Dynasty (2345 BC–2181 BC) of the Old Kingdom, it served as the tomb of the Pharaoh Teti. The pyramid is located in the Royal necropolis of Saqqara, near modern day Cairo. The pyramidstands at 117 feet (36 m) height, and its base is 222 feet (68 m) square. It is made up of limestone blocks, the outer layers of which are encased in a finely polished white limestone veneer. The pyramid contains six underground chambers and a large central room, which was probably meant for religious ceremonies and functions related to the cult of the Pharaoh. Two remaining pyramids of the Old Kingdom, those of Pepi I and Merenre, are located nearby at Saqqara. Although the Pyramid of Teti is badly damaged, several beautiful and well-preserved lateral walls remain. It also houses some of the finest reliefs from the Old Kingdom, depicting scenes from the funeral rituals of Teti. The Pyramid of Teti is a medium-sized pyramid located in the Saqqara necropolis of Egypt. It was the last pharaonic burial site of the 6th dynasty and the first funerary monument in the necropolis of Memphis. Built for Pharaoh Teti, the pyramid stands 62 metres tall and consists of six steps. In its interior, a long descending corridor leads to a chamber containing the burial chambers and two other rooms. In addition, several theories suggest the presence of a hidden chamber, but this remains uncertain. The granite lid covering the sarcophagus was found toppled in a corner of the chamber, while layers of gold and silver foil placed upon the mummy were left untouched. The pyramid complex is surrounded by a massive hypostyle hall, which in turn is enclosed by walls decorated with scenes from the Book of the Dead. The entrance to the complex is located on the north side of the pyramid and is reached by a long flight of steps. Other features of the pyramid complex are a 15-room long underground complex with a high burial chamber, false doors, additional chapels, and a boat-pavilion. The Pyramid of Teti at Saqqara is an ancient Egyptian pyramid located in the royal necropolis at Saqqara, north of Memphis. It was built in the Sixth Dynasty reign of Teti, the first Pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty. The pyramid was probably constructed in response to those of his predecessors in the Fourth and Fifth Dynasties. It is believed to date to the late 24th or early 25th century BC. Teti's pyramid complex includes a temple, several smaller subsidiary pyramids and a small mortuary temple. The main pyramid is 63 m (207.2 ft) on each side and approximately 43 m (140.2 ft) in height. The sides of the pyramid are slightly indented and the base is a perfect square with a slightly concave curvature. The entrance to the burial chamber is located at the centre of the north face. The underground chambers are encased in five layers of granite and limestone. The burial chamber has a 5.6 m (18.4 ft) gabled roof with a single portcullis blocking the way. The burial chamber also has a false door leading to a corridor that leads to the upper chambers. The internal structure of the pyramid is divided into three parts. The first part includes the antechamber, the second part is the burial chamber and the third includes the antechamber and the burial chamber. The pyramid was originally thought to have been the earliest pyramid to contain an underground network of corridors, but recent astronomical and archaeological evidence suggest that this is not the case and that the Time of Unification saw the addition of underground chambers to a number of existing pyramids. The mortuary temple is located up a slope on the east side of the pyramid and consists of two courtyards and a large pillared hall. It features an unfinished pyramid, likely intended to serve as a pyramidion. The pyramid of Teti has been the subject of ongoing archaeological exploration since the 18th century. In 2002, Japanese archaeologists found an underground passage connecting a neighbouring pyramid, that of Pepi I, to that of Teti.
