History:

Pskov-Caves Monastery was founded by Abbot Isaiah (Iosif) in 1473 during the reign of Ivan III. Abbot Isaiah was a monk who fled to the Pskov region to escape the Tatar raids in the area. It is believed that Isaiah modeled the monastery after the Kiev Caves Monastery, located in the Ukraine. The monastery enjoyed spiritual revival in the 16th century after a period of decline, when the monks acquired new land grants and privileges and started erecting churches and building walls around the compound. During this time, the monastery served as a spiritual and educational influence in the region. The monastery experienced its golden age during the 17th century when monasteries were the centres of religious and cultural life in Russia. During this time, Pskov-Caves also served as a fortress in protecting Pskov from numerous Polish sieges. In 1812 the Russian Emperor Alexander I closed all monasteries in the region, and the Pskov-Caves Monastery was no exception. All of the monks were expelled from the monastery and it was turned into a military hospital. The monastery was restored after the October Revolution in 1917, however, was again closed down in 1957 and only restored again in 1994. Today, the monastery is a functioning historical landmark and is a popular tourist attraction. It is also home to one of Russia's leading theological seminaries where priests are trained.
