The Mosque of Amr Ibn Al-As in Cairo is the oldest mosque in Egypt and the first mosque in Africa. It was built in 642 CE by Amr Ibn Al-As, the Muslim commander who conquered Egypt for the Arabs in 641 CE. The mosque stands on the site of a much older Coptic Christian church. It was built in an area known then as “Bab Al-Futuh” (the Door of Conquest). The architecture of the mosque is a mix of traditional Islamic and ancient Egyptian designs. The mosque's walls are made of mud bricks, and its minaret is made of Egypt's famous gray stone. The mosque is also famous for its Quranic inscriptions written by Egypt's greatest calligraphers.
