Brief History:
The Mosque of Al-Sayyidah Nafisa is an ancient mosque located in the city of Tanta in Egypt. It is believed to have been built during the Fatimid period in the 11th century and is named after the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). One of the distinctive features of the mosque is its large dome, which is unusual amongst Fatimid mosques. Inside the mosque lies a grave believed to be that of Al-Sayyidah Nafisa. The mosque is known to be a holy site of interes and people from all over Egypt come to visit and pay respect to Al-Sayyidah Nafisa throughout the year. It is one of the most famous mosque in Egypt which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Mosque of Al-Sayyidah Nafisa in Tanta, Egypt is a typical example of Islamic sunni architecture. The Mosque was constructed in the mid-14th century and follows the traditional four-iwan courtyard plan. The mosque has four portals or iwans, each one opening into a central courtyard. The southern iwan is the largest and most impressive, and leads to the prayer hall in the center. The prayer hall is topped by a central dome and flanked by four smaller cupolas. The interior is decorated with stucco carvings typical of the Mamluk style. On the exterior of the mosque, the masonry is decorated with carved stone and inlaid marble. The mosque is also decorated with a variety of blistered domes, minarets, and decorative interior niches. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
Mosque of Al-Sayyidah Nafisa is open from 5 AM to 11 PM daily. Visitors can enter the mosque in accordance with the applicable opening times, but there are also specific prayer hours which are set aside for prayer, and during which visitors should not attempt to enter. In order to preserve the dignity of the mosque, appropriate attire should be worn by visitors, including long pants and a shirt with at least short sleeves.
