The Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III is located in Luxor, Egypt and dates back to the New Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt. It was built during the reign of Amenhotep III who reigned from 1390 until 1353 BC and was one of the most powerful pharaohs of the time. The temple was dedicated to the god Amun-Ra as well as to the royal ancestor cult of Amenhotep III. The Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III was originally located directly next to the Temple of Karnak on the East Bank of the Nile River. This site was chosen for its religious importance as it was believed to have been the exact place where Amenhotep III was “freightened” when he ascended to the ruler of Egypt. It was also believed that this spot was where the god Amun-Ra granted his divine authority to Amenhotep III. The temple complex consisted of a large roofed pavilion with 24 columns as well as three large statues of the pharaoh.
