The Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great in Wadi El Natrun is an ancient Egyptian Coptic Orthodox monastery located in the Wadi El Natrun valley northwest of Cairo. Founded in the 4th century by Saint Macarius of Egypt, a spiritual heir of Saint Anthony the Great, it is one of the most important monasteries of the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria. This monastery holds great historical and spiritual importance for it is the place where the institution of the Coptic Papacy was founded and where some of the most important Coptic saints and leaders, such as Shenouda the Archimandrite, have lived and worked. The Monastery of Saint Macarius is home to a number of ancient Coptic buildings, manuscripts and artifacts, and has become a popular pilgrimage site for faithful Coptic Christians.
