City The Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral or Catedral Metropolitana was built in 1573 on the ruins of an old temple of the Aztecs. It was consecrated in 1667 and has been the most important Catholic building in Mexico City. It stands on the Plaza de la Constitución in the Historic Center of Mexico City, and owes its importance to the 18th century Virgin of Guadalupe, whose shrine is inside the building. The facade of the cathedral is renowned for its complex of three large, Baroque doorways that flank a central and more ornate door. The facade also includes a series of reliefs and sculptures, the most prominent of which is the Virgin of the Apocalypse, which is being eaten by a dragon. Other sculptures that decorate the building include two angels, four evangelists, and a representation of the patron saints of Mexico City. The cathedral has a complex of five naves and art works from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The altarpiece in the main chapel is in rococo style, made of marble, gut, and plaster, and consists of 29 levels with two bell towers and two 38-meter high towers.
