The Melbourne Star Observation Wheel is located in Docklands, Victoria, Australia. It was first opened on December 19th, 2008 by the then Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Robert Doyle. The Melbourne Star is the only Giant Observation Wheel in the Southern Hemisphere and stands at 120m tall (the height of a 40-storey building). It has 7 air-conditioned glass capsules, each holding up to 21 people, offering 360 degree panoramic views of Melbourne's city skyline. In 2010, the wheel underwent a $2.5 million upgrade which included new LED lighting to create new and unique lighting displays throughout the year. In 2013, the Melbourne Star was closed for 7 months to undergo a significant safety upgrade, with a new track system, braking system, and on-board safety systems. The new systems were installed by the world's leading manufacturers, making the Melbourne Star the safest and most advanced observation wheel in the world. The Melbourne Star re-opened in late 2013 with an official re-launch ceremony and has been operating each day since then, to the delight of locals and tourists visiting Melbourne.
