History:
Kuelap Cable Car is an aerial lift transportation system located in the province of Luya in Chachapoyas, Peru. The system is 4.3 miles (7 km) long and features one double decker gondola which travels between the towns of Nuevo Tingo and Tingo. The cable car system was opened in June 2014, making it the first of its kind in Peru. The idea for the cable car system was first proposed in 2012, with the project being funded by the Peruvian government. The cable car is designed to provide a safer and more efficient way for locals and tourists to travel the long, winding road between Nuevo Tingo and Tingo, which is the closest access point to the ancient Kuelap Fortress. Before the cable car was built, visitors had to take the winding path either in a van, on horseback, or on foot. The total cost of the project was roughly $4 million USD, and the groundbreaking took place in the year 2013. Construction was completed in a little over a year, and the system was first officially tested in April of 2014. Consisting of 54 towers, 3 access points, and four stations, the cable car system was unveiled to the public in June 2014. Since its completion, the Kuelap Cable Car has become a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of the modern development of the region.
