Worship Method:
Kongōchō-ji, located in the Ishikawa Prefecture of Japan, is a temple belonging to the Rinzai Zen Buddhist sect that practices a unique method of group meditation known as the “Kongōchō-ji Method.” This approach to worship is centered around a two-hour, group zazen (sitting meditation) practice that includes chanting, silent meditation, and other activities. This method of worship is said to be a way to gain enlightenment and clarity of mind. The first part of the method is centered on chanting sutras. The participants come together and hold tōka (unity meditation) in which they chant various sutras including the Lotus Sutra, Heart Sutra, and other Buddhist sutras. This is followed by a period of sitting meditation, and then three rounds of releasing stressful thoughts or feelings. This process helps the meditators to enter a deep state of mental stillness. The second part of the practice is focused on physical exercise or active meditation. The participants rotate from stationary to walking to kneeling postures of meditation. This all helps to increase concentration and offers the opportunity to reflect inwardly and cleanse the body and mind of negativity. The final part of the practice involves a period of reflection or contemplation, in which the participants are encouraged to ask themselves questions such as “Who am I?” and “What am I here to do?” During this time, the meditators can focus on clarity and potential realizations. This form of worship is believed to foster mental and physical wellness, by removing stress and promoting peace of mind. This approach to zen helps to cultivate a positive attitude, which can provide participants with a sense of inner peace and joy. Practicing Kongōchō-ji is a great way to gain insight into yourself and the world around you. This most visited temple in Japan
