The Japan Evangelical Lutheran Tokyo Church was founded in 1972, in the city of Tokyo. It was the culmination of a long process of planning and development within the Japanese Lutheran Church. In the late 1950's, the Japan Lutheran Church first began steps toward its own self-governance, culminating in its official incorporation as a registered denomination within Japan in 1968. With the support of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS) in the United States, the JLC began preparing for the organization of a newly established church in Tokyo. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
