History:

Himeji Castle is a hilltop Japanese castle complex located in the city of Himeji, Hyōgo Prefecture. The castle dates back to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura constructed the initial fortifications. Over the course of time, the castle underwent a number of renovations and expansions before it took on its present form in 1618. Himeji Castle was designated as a Japanese National Treasure in 1931 and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. The castle is known as "White Egret Castle" due to its white exterior and resemblance to a white egret in flight. The castle is often cited as the most beautiful surviving example of Japanese castle architecture. Himeji Castle was closed between February 15th and July 22nd 2020 for restoration work. This was the first full-scale repair project since the castle was restored in 2015. The project included work on the castle’s several turrets and stone walls.
