Gebel Barkal is an archeological site located near the city of Karima in Sudan. It is the only archaeological site in the world which contains a temple dedicated to the Pharaohs of the ancient kingdom of Kush, an ancient African kingdom located in Nubia in what is now the country of Sudan. The site was first discovered in 1834 by British explorer, James Bruce. It includes numerous monuments, as well as an associated UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is also of great historic and religious importance, as it is built at the base of a sacred mountain known as the "Mountain of the Gods," and is closely associated with the worship of Amun, an important deity in ancient Egyptian culture. The main plaza of the site, known as the Great Temple, is one of the most impressive structures in the area, and is surrounded by numerous other temples, shrines and sanctuaries. Gebel Barkal is also home to many artifacts, such as hieroglyphs, statues and inscriptions, as well as rock-cut carvings and wall paintings. These artifacts and features provide insight into the history and culture of ancient Nubia, which is closely linked to Egypt's.
