Gebel Barkal and the Napatan Region in Sudan (ancient Egyptian territory) is an archaeological site located in northern Sudan near the modern city of Karima. The site contains a large temple built by the ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Thutmose III dedicated to the god Amun. It is believed to be the spiritual center of the ancient Nubian kingdom of Napata, which would later become known as the Kingdom of Kush after its defeat by the Aksumite Empire in the 4th century CE. The site was also the site of many battles between the Romans and the Nubians during the Roman Empire's occupation of Egypt and Sudan. Gebel Barkal is home to many ancient ruins, temples, and other archaeological evidence of the ancient Nubian culture. The site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a popular tourist destination for those interested in ancient history.
