History:

Federation Square in Melbourne, Victoria was first opened to the public in October of 2002. The project began in 1997 as a joint venture of Federal and Victorian Governments with the aim of creating a high-profile cultural hub for Melbourne’s citizens and visitors. The site chosen for the Square’s construction was a former car park located at the intersection of Flinders Street and Swanston Street. The complex was designed by a team of architects and landscape designers lead by Lab Architecture Studio in collaboration with Bates Smart. It was the first Australian project to combine a major station building, a listed heritage building and a public structure within a contemporary design. The design of Federation Square incorporated architectural elements such as bricks, stone and terracotta and used an array of plants and trees to create a unique landscape with retained heritage features. A range of public art was installed throughout to help depict the history and values of the city and celebrate the diversity of its people. In 2007, the square was also officially named "Federation Square" in honour of the centenary of its founding in 1901, when the newly federated Australian states agreed to the Commonwealth of Australia and the Constitution.
