, the Espacio Escultórico de la UNAM is a pioneering project involving the integration of art and architecture, launched in 1970 by the director of the National University of Mexico (UNAM). The project includes a collection of sculptures by prominent Mexican artists, both contemporary and older, set in the university's open spaces. It aims to provide the Mexican audiences an opportunity to appreciate and learn about the country's modern and classical sculpture, as well as to serve as a venue for the diffusion of art. The project was launched in 1970 and was organized prior to Antonio Basawal, who was in charge of the project. In 1971, the commission for the project was created. By combining public investment together with private sponsorship, it was possible to acquire works from renowned sculptors such as Gilberto Aceves Navarro, Mathias Goeritz, Fernando Calderón, José Chávez Morado, Juan Soriano, and, more recently, Manuel Felguérez and Sebastián Sandoval. Since its inception, the project has gathered more than 100 pieces by more than 80 artists from around the world. The works are set around UNAM's long avenues, gardens and patios, as well as in some of the university's important buildings. Initially the works were mainly placed in the university's main areas, but eventually it grew to cover museums and galleries as well as other university spaces outside of the main campus. The project has earned several awards recognizing its innovation and achievement in the field of art and architecture, including the Rancière Foundation Award for Cultural Preservation and Protection of Public Space and the Golden LEAF International Cultural Landscape Award.
