Worship Method:
The practice of Eihō-ji is based on the Pure Land Buddhism (Jōdo-shū) school of Mahayana Buddhism. At Eihō-ji, the Dharma service is the central practice. The service is a chanting of the sutras performed by monks and laypeople alike. It is composed of two or three different sutras, starting with the Opening Sutra. Next come the Fundamental Sutra, followed by the Contemplative Sutra to end the service. This is accompanied with various movements and hand mudras, and the chanting is always followed by a period of meditation. Devotees are then invited to participate in circumambulating the temple several times while chanting the Nembutsu and after some farewell songs, the Dharma service ends.
