Church of Santos Cosme and Damian is a Roman Catholic church located in Rome, Italy. The church was established in the 16th century and is dedicated to the saints Cosmas and Damian, early Christian martyrs who are venerated by the Catholic Church as patron saints of physicians and surgeons. The interior of the church is decorated in Baroque style and features several works of art, including sculptures and paintings by renowned artists. The church also houses the tombs of Cardinal Giacomo Savelli and theologian Niccolò Comneo.
History
The Church of Santos Cosme and Damian was built between 1591 and 1595 on the ruins of an older church, which had been destroyed during the sack of Rome in 1527. Construction was overseen by architect Martino Longhi the Younger, and the church was completed in 1604.
In 1730, Pope Benedict XIII remodeled the sacristy and added a library to the church. In 1734, the facade and the bell tower were completely remodeled in Baroque style.
