History:

The devotion to Christ of the Sacred Heart began in Mexico more than two centuries ago, although the formal recognition from the Church of this cult did not take place until more than 100 years later, in the year 1980. The first manifestations of devotion to the Sacred Heart in Mexico took place in the late eighteenth century in the heart of a pious Mexican layman, Francisco Torres Balmori. With his spiritual director, Father Cirilo de Betanzos S.J., Torres Balmori established the first Monastery of Devotion to the Sacred Heart in the city of Taxco, Guerrero. Later, in 1801, he would found another monastery of the same kind in the city of Celaya in Guanajuato. In the 19th century, the devotion to the Sacred Heart was spread throughout Mexico thanks to the work of many missionaries, among them the Argentinian priest Carlos de Peralta, who organized a number of conferences in order to promote the Cult. In 1855, the Archbishop of Mexico, José María de la Peña y Navarro, officially recognized the Devotion to the Sacred Heart. In 1878, Pope Leo XIII promulgated the famous encyclical “Annum Sacrum”, in which he encouraged the practice of the Devotion to the Sacred Heart; this led to the expansion of the cult throughout the country. The first formal recognition granted by the Church of the Cult of Christ of the Sacred Heart in Mexico dates back to 1980, with the publication of the Apostolic Letter “Dono Divino”. This document, issued by Pope John Paul II, declared a Jubilee Year dedicated to Christ of the Sacred Heart in Mexico. Since then, the devotion to Christ of the Sacred Heart has grown steadily in Mexico, becoming one of the foundations of faith and spirituality in the country.
