Chapel San Juan Bautista is a historic Catholic chapel and mission in Las Tablas, Panama. It was founded in 1527 and is the oldest standing church in the Americas. The chapel was declared a National Monument in 1978 and is the only remaining structure from the early years of Spanish colonial rule in the region. It is known for its unique blend of Spanish and indigenous Panamanian architecture. The chapel has been a destination for pilgrims for centuries. The interior includes a baroque altar, images of several of the Catholic saints and a large bell from 1590. Today, the chapel houses a museum which contains artifacts from its long history, including wooden sculptures and furniture from the colonial period.
