The church was built in 1745 by a group of missionaries sent to Japan by Pope Benedict XIV. The structure was designed by the Italian priest, Father Michael Bruno Schirò who became the first pastor of the church. Before construction could begin, the local lord granted permission with the condition that he would keep the exterior as simply as possible with no decorations or other adornments. The church is largely built of wood and has stood the tests of time, surviving several large earthquakes over the years.
