The first church on the current site was built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 13th and 15th centuries. The present building, however, was built in the 20th century after the old building was destroyed in a fire in 1845. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.

The Cathedral Church of St Mary is a three-aisled basilica with a chancel and two transepts and a nave. The current building was constructed in 1910 and consecrated in 1920. The main entrance is at the north side, and there are four other entrances at the south, east and west sides of the building. The roof of the building is covered in pink and gray slate.
