History:

Beihai Park, which is located in Beijing's central city, is one of the oldest and most famous imperial gardens in China, with a history of more than 1,000 years. Originally built in the Liao Dynasty (907–1125), the park was expanded during the Jin Dynasty (1115–1234). During the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368), Kublai Khan expanded the park and created an artificial lake, giving it its current name, which literally means “north lake”. In 1420, during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), Ming Emperor Yongle enlarged the park, added the Round City and filled the lake with water from the Wei River near Datong, Shanxi Province. He also renamed the park after himself, Qiao Changyuan (Yongle's original name), which referred to the park's position at the north end of the city. In the late Qing Dynasty (1644–1912), Beihai Park was greatly expanded by the Qianlong Emperor. During this time, a white dagoba was built, and the Hall for Appreciating Rarities was also built. Today Beihai Park is a popular tourist destination in Beijing and has more than 60 attractions for visitors to explore.
