Construction of the basilica, began around 1232, begun when a group of merchants from Padua obtained a bone from the arm of St. Anthony and placed it in the Portico della Vita, one of the outer walls of the basilica. The facade of the basilica is made up of three parts, the first of which, is a simple yet harmonious building made of bricks. The second part, which was completed in 1313, is the great portico, which is an example of Gothic and Romanesque combined style, having a great rose window in its center and some statues of saints and prophets. The third part is the dome, built in the fifteenth century by Andrea Vicentino, following the same style of the construction of the earlier two parts. The basilica houses the tombs of the remains of St. Anthony and those of other important figures such as St. Giacomo, Giovanni Cellini, and Giuseppe da San Martino. Every year, from the first Sunday in June to the last Sunday in September, the basilica holds a procession of the relics, in which the relics of Saint Anthony are carried through the streets of Padua.
