History:

The Annunciation Cathedral is one of the oldest and most important cathedrals in Russia. It is located in the Moscow Kremlin and is the main church of the complex. The cathedral was founded by Grand Prince Ivan Kalita in 1326, who chose a site for the building directly on the Red Square in Moscow. Initially the Annunciation Cathedral was much smaller than it is today, consisting of just five domes and a single aisle. However, the cathedral was gradually expanded over the centuries. In 1484, Grand Prince Ivan III of Muscovy decided to rebuild the cathedral on a much larger scale, with its walls, five domes and two transepts. This larger version was consecrated in 1489 by the patriarch of Moscow, who said the following words during the ceremony: "Arise, the large and magnificent temple of the Annunciation.” In 1624, a fire broke out in the Kremlin and damaged the Annunciation Cathedral, but it was quickly restored. In 1712 it was rebuilt yet again with the addition of ten gold-plated domes and a new iconostasis. The iconostasis has remained virtually unchanged to this day and today is an iconic example of Russian Orthodox architecture. In 1754, Empress Elizabeth of Russia was crowned in the cathedral and a year later the coronation of Tsar Peter III took place here.
