History:

The Amazon river in Loreto, Peru was first explored by Europeans in 1539. This was during Francisco de Orellana's expedition, which was part of an effort by the Spanish Crown to explore the interior of South America in search of El Dorado. The party followed the banks of the Amazon for thousands of miles. Orellana and his men encountered hostile natives and were forced to fight many battles before reaching the mouth of the river in Peru. The mouth of the river was too incredibly large for them to enter, and so they continued exploring by taking canoes along the river until they eventually arrived in what is now the city of Iquitos. This journey was incredibly dangerous and Orellana was the only survivor of the expedition. He returned to Spain with tales of the 'Amazonas,' which he believed to be giant women warriors. This legend of the Amazonas persisted for centuries and had a significant impact on the perception of the Amazon river among Europeans. In the centuries since then, the Amazon River has been an important center of indigenous cultures, international trade, and conservation. The river still holds great cultural significance to the people of Loreto, who use the river for transport, fishing, and to access its rich biodiversity.
