Al-Muallaqa Church in Cairo is an ancient Coptic Orthodox Church which dates back to the beginning of the fourth century A.D. It is located near to the Coptic Museum of Coptic History in Old Cairo. The church was built by the Roman Emperor Constantine and is one of the oldest Coptic churches in the world.

Al-Muallaqa Church in Cairo is known as the “Hanging Church” due to the fact that it was built atop the gatehouse of the old Babylon Fortress, which itself was built upon the remains of a fortress dating back to the time of the Pharaohs. According to legend, it was the site where the Virgin Mary rested on her way to Egypt in the first century. The church was greatly damaged in the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the 7th century, but was later restored and rebuilt. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Egypt.
