History:

The Church of Immaculate Conception in Zimbabwe is one of the oldest Catholic churches in the country, and its foundation dates back to the early 1800s. It is located in the small town of Umvuma, about 80km south of Harare. The story of the Church goes back to 1808, when Portuguese settlers introduced Catholicism to the area, alongside the bringing of the Church of England, which had been established in the 1690s. It wasn't until 1878 that the Catholic Church was recognised, when an Irish missionary priest, Fr Michael McKenna, was the first to be recognised as the pastor of Umvuma. He was later joined by another priest, Fr John Downes, who became the first resident pastor of Umvuma town and the Church of Immaculate Conception in 1881. Since then, the church has grown in size to accommodate the growing Catholic faithful in Umvuma. It has an impressive architecture which comprises of a main entrance, side wings, a belfry, and a high roof. In addition, the entrance has a gate which was used to separate the men from the women within the church. Within the church, there are many beautiful murals and stained glass windows adorned by ornate stonework. The Church of Immaculate Conception still stands today, as an important part of Zimbabwe’s Catholic heritage. It continues to receive many visitors and parishioners who come to pray and attend Mass.
